Saudi Arabia a country where Women have strict gender separation came out with a revolutionary Women's bill which allows them to vote in elections and run in Municipal elections. The bill been approved by Saudi Arabia King Abdullah on this historic day 25 September.
Current laws in Saudi Arabia includes women banned from driving, strict legal consequences in case of crime for women compared with male counterparts and no voting and election participation rights. With this new law all the Muslim women community will be empowered to take the male domination existing in Saudi Arabia and can fight for their rights.
There is the element of the Arab Spring, there is the element of the strength of Saudi social media, and there is the element of Saudi women themselves, who are not silent, said Hatoon al-Fassi, a history professor and one of the women who organized a campaign demanding the right to vote this spring.
In his announcement, the king said that women would also be appointed to the Majlis Al-Shura, a consultative council that advises the monarchy on matters of public policy. But it is a toothless body that avoids matters of royal prerogative, like where the nation's oil revenue goes.
King Abdullah, the 87-year-old monarch who has a reputation for pushing reforms opposed by some of his half-brothers among the senior princes said "We refuse to marginalize the role of women in Saudi society, women would also be appointed to the Majlis Al-Shura, a consultative council that advises the monarchy on matters of public policy".
Municipal elections in Saudi Arabia are commencing from this Thursday, but the campaign is almost over and the king said that women would be able to nominate themselves and vote as of the next session in 2015.
